Family Olympics!!

On Saturday night at the reunion my mom mentioned that we should have had a family Olympics.  We thought it was a good idea and she recruited Brad to help plan it.  Then on Sunday morning my mom and Jill ended up taking Kasi, Alyse and Bianca to urgent care.  They are all going to be fine!  I told Joe and Brad that they should go ahead and plan the Olympic events and they went for it.  They put some serious effort and planning in in a very short period of time and they did a great job.

As we all ate lunch together on Sunday we mentioned the Olympics to everyone and it didn’t look like we were going to be able to have it.  Then we started asking who would be interested.  We managed to get 18 participants.  We had a few people that didn’t want to participate, so I decided that they should be the team captains and pick teams.  Uncle Bob, Auntie Marlene and Auntie Judy picked the teams.  As my mom and Aunt Judy were looking at the teams my mom said “Aunt Judy I am not on your team” and Aunt Judy replied “Oh honey I love you, but I want to win!”

The Olympics include several contest and relays.  It took place all over the resort grounds.  We had several cheerleaders that followed us around.  The first was a relay: a paddle boat race out and around a fountain in the pond, a Frisbee toss relay followed by another paddle boat race.   My mom and Kasi had some serious issues on the first leg of the paddle boat race.  They went every direction except forward!

The next event was Volleyball.  It was a round robin tournament.  My team won again!

So much fun!

Not really sure what is going on

Then there was another relay: get a certain amount of basketballs in the hoop, carry a member of your team to the horseshoe pits, then a race to get two team members to get a horseshoe ringer.  Three people throwing horseshoes at the same time and racing to pick them up and try again was a bit dangerous!

Trying so hard!

The last event was a triathlon.  It included two people from each team swimming a lap in the indoor pool (fully clothed), two people rode bikes, and two people had to run.  There was a bit of a discrepancy about who won.  Joe and Jill were on opposite teams and Joe beat Jill on the running portion but he didn’t cross the official finish line.  Jill did and then decided Joe’s team didn’t win.  We went into a tie breaker tennis match.  There were three teams but the other team wasn’t close to being tied with us.  Sorry guys!

The debate!

The tie breaker tennis match was Matt and Jill vs. Joe and Brad.  It was a very close match but Matt and Jill won!  It was awesome!

Shaking hands after Jill and Matt won!

Historically when there is a family competition Brad wins and then he is accused of cheating.  I was so excited to win and no one could accuse us of cheating.  Seeing Brad and Joe lose while Jill and I were on the winning team was great!  Brad was having a hard time with it and claims that they didn’t win because it would have looked bad.  His theory was that their team was made up mostly of the “outlaws” and if they won it would have looked bad and they would have been kicked out of the family or something.  All I have to say is excuses, excuses, excuses!

Elliot, Nolan and Vince watched the whole family Olympics and they really wanted to participate in their own Olympics.  Dana was kind enough to set up a little Olympics for them.

Vince was not happy that he lost

The reunion ended with Grandma Pat, Papa, the kids and I loading up in the motor home while Brad crawled underneath and fixed the step.  Then we headed for home.  Vince was so sad that he had to leave his friends and I think the rest of us were wishing we could have stayed longer.

While we were dropping Grandma Pat and Papa off at their house, Vince was talking to Cecilia.  He said “Mommy, Cecilia can talk!  She just said mama!”  I said “Are you sure?  She is a baby and she can’t talk.  Joel is 2 and he barely talks.”  Without missing a beat Vincent said “Oh Mommy, Joel talks!  He just speaks Spanish.”  If only it were that simple.
