Halloween Fun with my little monsters

Sunday we went to my mom's church and afterwards there was a Halloween/Fall Party.  There was food and games for all ages.  The boys had fun wearing their costumes and trying their first attempt for the year at trick or treating.  Joel didn't really care about the trick or treating.  He just liked being outside!  Part way thru the party Vince decided he wanted to be a pirate like Tina.  She was nice enough to share one of her swords and her eye patch with him.  In return he began calling her Aunt Tina!  So for awhile he was a "three eyed monster pirate" and then he was just "a pirate, but a nice one that cuts bad guys into pieces and sweeps them up into the garbage can and then they go into the garbage truck and to the landfill!"  He slept with the sword and patch on his nightstand Sunday night and played with it all morning on Monday.

After church we had a little get together at my mom's before trick or treating in a near by town started.  We only participated in the last 30 minutes of trick or treating since it was cold, wet and started raining again while we were walking around.  Vince was not shy about saying "trick or treat" and had fun.  Joel had fun walking around outside but at his age he doesn't really care about the rest of it.  While we were walking around Vince saw a kid with a pitch fork and said "hey, are you a farmer?"  The kid was dressed in all yellow and responded "no, I am a yellow devil."  Vince replied "oh."  He was a little disappointed that the kid wasn't a farmer.  My former boss lives in the town were we were trick or treating and we stopped by there on our way out of town.  Joel ran right into the house and jumped into Doc's recliner and made himself right at home.  Before we left the kids had given themselves a tour of the house and had 2 bowls of chocolate ice cream.  The kids were ok with me saying no after the first bowl, but Doc wasn't and really thought they needed 2 bowls of chocolate ice cream!  It was a great visit and I am really happy we were able to visit with him!  The kids were wired and stayed awake all the way home, which meant they went to bed without too many issues, so maybe the ice cream was a good thing.

Mommy and Daddy and their 2 monsters!
Today we went to a local nursing home for trick or treating.  It was great!  They were so generous with their goodies, it was warm, and their were no streets for me to worry about.  The boys both came away with more candy than they have ever seen.  I am a terrible mom and I have already sorted thru all the candy and figured out what they get and what we get!  It is about equal, but I am hiding their bowl and using it for rewards (AKA Bribery!).  We also stopped at Grandma's house and got chocolate chip cookies and I didn't hide (or eat) those yet.

This morning I tried to get the boys to help me start on the pumpkin carving by cleaning out the pumpkins.  It lasted all of 3 minutes.  I cleaned 5 pumpkins by myself!  Then after trick or treating and dinner we finished pumpkin carving.  This time I got a little more help.  Vince told me what shapes to make the faces and I did the carving.  We had 5 pumpkins because Vince insisted that he needed one for his little sister.  I designed hers and mine.  During the carving Vince sat still and patiently watched.  Joel kept climbing on the table and dancing, one of his favorite activities!  The problem is when I have a knife in my hand my reaction time to catch him is slightly slower.  I had to keep running to the kitchen, put the knife down, get Joel off the table, run to the kitchen and grab the knife, carve for a minute and then repeat.  A couple times Joel was distracted by wrestling the dogs or dancing to the "Dancing with the Stars" music on tv and that bought me some much needed time.  The boys were very happy with the final results and really wanted me to find candles to put in them, but to be honest we were on a tight time schedule and that wasn't going to happen.  By the time pumpkin carving ended it was after 8:30pm.  There is 1 tv show that I feel I deserve to (need to) watch undisturbed all week and it starts at 9pm.  I don't like to tell the kids they have to go to bed so I can watch tv, so I just had to make sure we quickly got everyone to bed in 30 minutes.  It worked and I got to relax and watch Castle mostly uninterrupted (Brad tried to call but I wouldn't talk to him until a commercial)!  A great ending to a wonderful day!

Grandma Pat

Today is my grandmother's birthday.  Growing up I thought it was hilarious that her birthday was on Halloween.  I don't know why but it just cracked me up.  I would tease her and tell her she was a witch.  I was lucky enough to get to spend a little bit of time with her Saturday and Sunday!

Always the life of the party!
I won't tell you how old my Grandma is because she probably wouldn't like it.  I can tell you that she doesn't look remotely close to her real age.  She is hardworking (as of 2 months ago she is working a full time job again), caring, funny, and is always willing to watch my children even when they are sick!  She is a lady on a mission and never sits still and will still get down on the floor to play with the kids.  Grandma Pat is also the queen of "the generation photo."  We have tons and I am glad for it, but it has become a running joke at family gatherings.  She doesn't think it is as funny as we do!  Grandma Pat also is known for her incredible luck at a casino and always having her camera to take pictures.  In my wedding photos you see a ladies hand holding a camera in almost all the pictures of people walking down the aisle...it is my grandmas!  Below are some family or generation pictures that I quickly found on the computer.  I know there are more!

I was blessed to get to spend a great deal of time with my grandma growing up and we have always been close and she is always there for me.  She has come over during many of our renovation projects to help with the cleaning and organizing and is always happy to help.  If I were her I don't know if I would have come over to help...it was bad on more than 1 occasion around here.

Taking a break from the kitchen renovation clean up.

Grandma Pat I love you!  Happy Birthday!

Halloween Costumes

A while ago Vince saw a costume in a magazine from a very famous toy store.  I had no desire to buy the costume.  Something about spending a lot of money for a costume he will wear for a few hours.  The costume he liked was a blue monster with three eyes and some extra arms.  Vince was more excited about it being a three eyed monster and the rest of the details were lost on him (lucky for me!).  He saw this costume in the beginning of September and I was worried he might change his mind, so I put off making the costume until last week.  Vince has been asking about it since Labor Day weekend and we have had to have conversations about the order of things.  First is harvest, then Halloween, then Thanksgiving and Christmas.  The second the combine pulled into the field Vince was ready for Halloween and he was convinced Joel wanted to be a three eyed monster too.

One night last week I got out the different supplies to make the costumes.  Vince was up still and I started with his costume so he could be around to try it on occasionally for me to see how it was coming along and he wanted to "help."  Armed with my glue gun, sharpie, and other craft supplies we got started.  Somewhere along the way Vince ended up with the kid scissors sitting on top of the table working on his part of the project.  I am still not sure what that was exactly, but he love cutting up the newspaper with all night.  Once the costume was finished Vince was thrilled!  It was a mixture of being happy he was up over 1 hour past his bedtime and happy to finally have the costume he had been asking for for over 1 month.

A couple days later during nap time I was able to get Joel's costume mostly finished.  Joel was not nearly as happy with the costume.  He was "yelling" at me and trying to pull the eyes off when I showed it to him.  Then I tried to put the top part on and he took off running thru the house.  I caught up with him and tried to get the costume on him, but he wouldn't let me.  I couldn't even wrestle it onto him.  Hopefully before Sunday or Monday he gets over hating the costume.  I have 2 other costume choices that he can try (a dinosaur and a spider) if he doesn't like the monster.  We will see what happens.  Hopefully he was just in a bad mood before and once Vince is all dressed up Joel will want to be too.  Stay tuned for pictures of the finished product and to see if what costume Joel ends up wearing!

Tuesday night...is this a joke?

Tuesday night we have Awana Club.  In order to be there on time we have to leave the house by 6 pm.  Leaving on time is a struggle for us, especially around dinner time.  At 5pm I started boiling water for pasta.  I went to the bathroom and Joel came with and played in the sink.  I have learned that as a mom of small children you rarely get to use the bathroom alone.  In this case I didn't mind because I would rather Joel play in the sink than climb on the stove while it was hot.  When I went back to making dinner Vince ended up in the bathroom and started playing in the sink with Joel.  Vince knows how to close the drain and that makes it more fun for Joel and Vince.  I should have been checking on the boys more closely, but the noodles were boiling over and I was just happy to have them out of the way.  When the noodles and sauce were ready I realized that the boys had basically flooded our bathroom.  The boys, the floor, the tiles on the wall, the stool and chair they were standing on were all drenched!  At this point it was 5:20pm.  We had only 40 min to get out of the house but I was still hopeful because I already had everything else in the car.  I took all of Vince's clothes off him and had him eat dinner in a bib and with a towel on his lap.  I would dress him after he ate the pasta and sauce.  He was happy!  I left Joel's onesie on him and put him in the highchair.  I cleaned the bathroom (it took 2 large beach towels and a hand towel to dry everything) while they ate.

At 5:45pm Vince was done and ready to get dressed.  I wiped his face, hair and hands clean and gave him his clothes and told him to get dressed.  I went to grab Joel out of the highchair when I realized we had a problem.  There was very liquidy poop leaking out of his diaper into his highchair and his face and hands were covered in sauce.  The sink was full of dishes so I couldn't give him a quick bath and there was no way we would make it to the bathtub without leaving a trail behind us.  I took off his soaking wet onesie and the poor kid was covered in poop and sauce from head to toe.  It was awful!!  As I was squealing from disqust I realized we had another problem.  My wonderful dog Maisy was trying to eat the noodles out of the highchair and was getting way to close to the poop.  I kept yelling at her, but I couldn't do anything about it without putting Joel down. The thought of her cleaning up Joel's poop was enough to make me want to vomit.  Luckily when I told her to kennel she listened!

While I was using 1/3 of a package of wipes to clean him up Vince was running around the house half naked thinking he was funny by putting his clothes on the wrong way.  While pants on the head and a shirt on your legs is hiliarious, it is less hilarious when we need to leave to go somewhere and I am in the middle of cleaning up a poop explosion on a crying squirmy kid.  The whole time I was cleaning Joel Vince was in his own little world trying to get dressed.  I wasn't even sure he knew what had happened.  Vince proved me wrong when we walked into Awana (on time!) and the first thing he told his teacher was "My brother pooped all over the house.  He had a poop -splosion."  After this hour of craziness I was convinced there had to be a hidden camera in my house and it was all just a bad joke or at least we could win some money on America's Funniest Home Videos.

Getting two kids fed and out of the house in 1 hour isn't so bad.  The boys flooding the bathroom not really a big deal.  A poop explosion not the end of the world.  All three happening in 1 hour was borderline insanity!  We all made it out in 1 piece and I have a funny memory to show for it, but I am not interested in a repeat anytime soon.

A Strange Day

Tuesday morning Joel was in bed with me while Brad was getting ready for work.  Joel's favorite word is "No" so it can be fun to ask him questions that you know the answer is "yes" but he insists the answer is "No!"  Brad was asking Joel a bunch of questions and then asked if he wanted to go farm with him.  Joel said "No" with a smile on his face and Vince (who we thought was asleep in his room) spoke up and said "I want to go farm with Daddy."   My only plans for the day were laundry and grocery shopping.  I decided we could probably squeeze in some time farming, especially since the grocery store was in the same general direction.  I figured I could drop off Vince, go shopping with Joel, come back let Joel ride in the tractor and head home for lunch and afternoon naps.

On our drive Brad jokingly said they were short a grain cart operator this morning and the boys and I could jump in and drive one if we wanted.  I knew that wasn't going to happen because Joel can't last more than 15 minutes in a tractor.  I told Brad he could take Joel (and his carseat) in the semi with him and Vince and I would run the tractor.  Vince wasn't thrilled with this idea because he wanted to ride in the combine with Uncle Bob.  He tells me that is his favorite part!  Vince did end up riding in a grain cart with me and also with Grandpa for awhile and then went into the combine.  Vince tells me he took a short rest in the combine, hopefully he was up long enough to enjoy himself.

Picture from earlier this year...I never took any pictures yesterday.

It has been a couple years since I have driven the grain cart and caught a load off the combine.  It makes me nervous for the first few times and then I start to feel a little better about it.  It used to bother me when I would think about how much the combine, tractor and grain cart cost and I would get nervous that I would break expensive equipment.  I have mostly gotten over that!  I never have been worried about anyone getting hurt.  The part that makes me nervous is screwing up royally and having to endure the wrath of my brother in law.  He isn't a mean person, but down time due to a breakdown is not a good thing and even though technically we all own the combine it really is his baby!  Then there is the endless ridicule from my father in law and endless teasing from my husband until either they or I die or someone screws up worse between now and then..  Because no matter what the situation is Stewart men rarely believe (or at least admit) they are in the wrong.  Plus, with my luck if something happened the part we would need to fix it would be in Germany and it would be sunny nice days until the part came and then it would rain for 3 weeks straight and it would be Christmas before harvest was over!  Ok, that is probably a little bit of an exaggeration, but in my mind that is how it would go, so even when I get comfortable after catching a few loads I always am just a little nervous when I am helping.  I tell myself they should be happy just to have the extra help and I am sure they are as long as I don't screw up too much.  Despite my (ir)rational fears I LOVE driving a grain cart!  I think it is fun and I really do like the challenge and wish I could help out more.   I think it is good for the boys to see their mom helping in the field from time to time.  They need to know girls can drive heavy equipment too!

After spending 2.5 hours helping and getting lunch for everyone we ended up not going grocery shopping or to the bank.  Taking 2 kids to the store that should have been napping just seemed like a bad idea, so we headed home for nap time!

A nice Monday

Yesterday was a beautiful day and the boys and I tried to take advantage of it.  We spent part of the morning and afternoon playing outside.  We played on the swings, in the sandbox, on the tree house, they rode the Gator around, visited the horses, and played in the yucky barn (it really isn't yucky).

Tally chasing down the boys hoping they will throw her new toy for her.

Practicing a new skill
Vince has been asking about getting a bike and learning to ride a bike a lot lately, so after church we stopped by the farm and grabbed a couple smaller bikes that we thought would work for him.  We have tried bikes at Grandma's before, but his legs are just too short.  We took both the bikes to the yucky barn so that the boys could try them out on cement.  Sunday Vince was struggling a little, but on Monday he was a lot better.  It is a struggle for him because his feet barely reach the pedals, but he is determined to ride a bike by himself.  Joel has been using the other bike.  He is way to little for it, but gets excited and yells "mine bike" when he sees it.  If you weren't Joel's mother you probably would only understand the "mine" part but trust me the second word is supposed to be bike!  Joel just likes to be pushed all around the barn and is so proud of himself.
I can do it too!

Steering is difficult because he has to turn the wheel each time he pedals so he can reach better.

Joel was yelling "Mommy."  He wanted a push!

For weeks Vince has been talking about building a leaf pile to jump in.  One of the plus sides to living in the country where it is pretty flat is that the wind usually just blows the leaves right out of your yard.  Yesterday I figured we better give the leaf pile a try before it was too late.  Plus as a kid I loved making leaf piles and would play in them for hours.  I didn't want Vince to miss out.  We raked up a fairly small pile of leaves, but Vince was thrilled and both the boys played in the pile for awhile!  A very nice way to spend probably one of the last warm days of fall.

A Small Change in Routine

Each of the boys have their own seperate routine at bedtime.  Joel usually goes to bed first and gets a book and a song that I made up.  I can't carry a tune in a bucket but both the boys seem to like it anyway.  Although I don't sing it anymore to Vince.  Usually you have to read the book and sing the song fast because all Joel wants to do is jump into his crib and cuddle with his blanket.  Vince goes to bed shortly after Joel and gets 1 story and then we pray.  He likes to say his prayers and then I get to say my prayer.  His prayers used to change nightly, but he now starts with praying for someone who is sick (it changes depending on who needs the prayer) and then prays for Mommy, Daddy, Joel and then usually a random person or people or inanimate object and then sums it up with "and all my friends, Amen."

The last few nights he has asked for the prayer that we say at church.  Keep in mind 99.5% of the time he is either in the nursery or in Sunday School during church.  I had no idea which prayer he thought was the church prayer, but I decided it was the Lord's Prayer and he hasn't corrected me yet.  So for the last few days when he wants to do the "church prayer" I say a few words and then he repeats after me.  It is quite adorable to hear him say some of the bigger words.  I haven't decided if he likes to do the Lord's Prayer because he doesn't have to think of a prayer on his own or if he just likes it.  Generally when Vince asks for something it is well thought out and he has a reason.  For now I will just go with the flow and not question it because learning the Lord's Prayer is a good thing!

Little Helpers

I worked this weekend and Brad decided he could watch Vince while I was at work.  I was a little worried about it because they would be at the farm working with the grain set up and getting everything running properly.  There would be semi trucks bringing in corn from the field and Brad would occasionally have to go to the top of the grain set up (100+ feet tall) to work on things.  That would leave Vince down below by himself.  Vince does a great job of following directions lately, but he still is only 3 years old.  We told Vince a couple days before that he was going to go to work with Daddy on Saturday.  He wanted to make sure I would pack snacks for him and Daddy to share.  Saturday morning when he woke up I asked him if he was ready for work.  He said "Yes, but I need my work clothes on".

Attempting to get a picture of my boys
Vince had a great day with Brad!  Vince got to help press different buttons to start up the grain dryer as well as using the moisture tester for Brad.  Vince also was in charge of opening hopper doors on the trucks.  They open with a remote and Brad would tell him when to open and close them on the truck.  Vince also got to sweep corn into the pit.  I tried to get a picture of him doing it, but he didn't want to show me how he did that.  He was more interested in showing me the moisture tester.  Vince also was able to spend time with his cousin Keith and even got to go watch his soccer game!  When I asked Vince about his day he kept talking about the buttons and his buddy Keith.  Keith is in 2nd grade and Vince thinks Keith is awesome!  It also sounded like Vince was able to ride in the tractor and combine for awhile.  He didn't want to come home and insisted on taking a nap at Grandma and Grandpa's house so that he could go back and help Daddy when he woke up.  It was so fun seeing his excitement and seeing how much fun Brad had teaching him!

Brad and Vince working hard.
Joel had a fun morning as well.  He was able to spend the day with my cousins Kristy and Brett.  A house full of new to him toys and no older brother to boss him around!  He got to play outside, go on a walk and watch Mickey Mouse (we don't get that channel at our house).  Joel was all smiles when I got there and fell asleep before I left their subdivision, so I am guessing he had a fun time as well.  I love having my cousin live close and I  love that our kids get to play together more than twice a year!  It is such a blessing!

This week!

It seems like we have been a little less busy this week, but I still never found time to post or I fell asleep by the time I had time to post.  Here is a recap of our week!

The guys got done harvesting in FC on Monday night!  There is still some tillage work to get done.  It is nice to have Brad back around home even if he isn't home that much.  At least we know it is a short drive to go find him, plus he can be in charge of taking out the garbage again.  I really do not enjoy that job!  We brought dinner out to the field one night this week and Vince was thrilled to get to ride in the combine and see everyone.  It was close to Joel's bedtime so he wasn't interested in anything other than getting in his carseat so he could go home!

Vince had Open House at Awana Club this week and since it was raining Brad was able to come too.  It was interesting watching Vince interact with the teachers and other kids.  He did a great job following directions, staying quiet when the teachers were talking and he answered a lot of the questions that the teachers were asking the class.  We were very proud of him!  Joel was with us during part of the Open House and we were watching Vince's class play games.  After a little while Vince raised his hand and said "Um, do you have a nursery we could send my brother to?"  The teacher looked confused, but Joel did end up going to the nursery!

This week the boys and I cleaned out some closets.  Not a ton of fun, but the kids didn't seem to mind and had fun looking at everything and "helping" me.  We actually managed to get 3 closets cleaned out, it did take almost 3 days, but it got done.  At one point we took a break and were playing upstairs in the spare room on the kids bouncy house.  They like when I lay in the bouncy house and play with them.  I can get in no problem, getting out takes a little more time and effort (and the boys know it!).  Joel jumped out and was playing by the bed and then all of a sudden disappeared.  He had crawled under the bed.  The bed is pretty low to the ground and difficult to get under and you can only crawl under from the foot of the bed.  I tried to coax Joel back to me but he just kept laughing and crawling farther away.  I had no idea how I was going to get him out and I was worried he was going to think he was stuck and get scared.  After Vince realized Joel was getting attention for crawling under the bed he started to give it a try.  I grabbed onto his feet and told him to grab Joel's feet and to "hold on even if Joel cries or gets mad."  Vince did a great job and I pulled them both out from under the bed!  They did a great job of dusting the floor for me!  I might just let them go under the bed more often.

Hoping to find/make more time to post this week and share some pictures!  If I stop falling asleep on the couch before 10pm it will probably help.

Slime

A couple days ago on PBS Vince and I saw a segment about making slime.  We both thought it looked like fun!  So yesterday we made slime out of corn starch, water and green paint.  It was so much fun!  Joel wasn't interested in playing with it but Vince and I sat in the kitchen and played for awhile.  After awhile I left Vince alone so I could go play with Joel.  When I returned to check on him the slime went from being in a bowl on his table to on the table.  Later it ended up all over the table, floor and his hair.  He had a blast and I was expecting a mess when we started.  It took me a little longer than I thought to get it all cleaned up, but it was worth it.  I think next time we will go out to the barn to make slime.

He wasn't ready to get both hands dirty at first

Then he changed his mind!

It had a real weird texture on the table.
Everyone needs a little slime in their hair :)

Konow Farms

Joel and the alpacas.  Vince thought they were weird.

Joel just loved all the animals.

My cousin Kristy invited the boys and I to go to Konow Farms with her and her son Brett.  It was definitely worth the drive!  I lucked out and both the boys napped in the car on the way there so I had 2 happy boys the whole time we were there.  When we first got there I was amazed at everything there was to do and so were the 3 boys.  We started by visiting the animals, then moved on to the barn that had a corn pit, pedal tractors to ride, a bouncy house obstacle course, a mechanical bull (we didn't do that), and an area with a water pumps to race toy ducks.  Joel liked riding the tractors and Vince loved the bouncy house obstacle course and the corn pit.  Kristy and I went in the bouncy house obstacle course to take Joel and Brett.  Most of it was easy going even for an adult and we were able to help some random kids navigate their way through the obstacles.  However, at the end there was a tunnel and it was very very small.  I can't speak for Kristy but I had a hard time getting thru the tunnel.  Another mom that was waiting for her son to get out commented that it was pretty funny watching us get thru the tunnel.

Brett and Joel riding tractors.  Joel had a hard time deciding between a pink International and a John Deere.

When the tractors aren't where you want them you just move them.

Much better!

The corn pit was fun and Brett and Vince loved it.  Joel did not like the corn kernels getting stuck in his toes.  At one point there was a group of handicapped kids in the corn pit with their aides.  Vince marched right over there and started talking to all of them.  Most of the kids couldn't communicate very well if at all, but they seemed to be enjoying the feeling of the corn.  Vince was more than happy to help the aides cover the kids feet and legs with corn.  I was trying to get him out of the corn pit and finally got him to come over to the wall and told him we needed to get going to something else and he said "yeah, but I was talking to them and I didn't say by."  So, he marched over and said goodbye to several of the people over there.

Joel trying to decide if he liked the corn pit or not

There was a shed with large bales of straw stacked up in a way that there was tunnels, a bale of straw to slide down and a large tower of straw to climb up.  Vince was fine in there on his own.  Joel didn't want to be left behind and that meant I got to follow.  There were some very small holes to climb thru that were made for children and not for me.  A few times I had to help the boys up thru a hole or down thru a hole and then run around to find another opening to catch up with them.

Joel climbing in the straw

Vince going down the straw slide
After the straw we moved on to an outdoor jumping pillow, another bouncy house and an area to ride tricycles around.  In the bouncy house there was a little girl about Vince's age who kept telling him he wasn't a big kid.  Vince was not pleased about this!  He told the girl he was a big kid and when the little girl yelled at him again and said he wasn't a big kid he finally yelled back at her that he was a big kid.  Later she started hitting him on the head and I was very happy that he did not hit her back.  Later he asked me "why that girl be mean, I just wanted to be her friend."  Poor kid, he felt so bad!

Jumping pillow
They had hayrides and a cow train.   The cow train was a blast!  They had turned large plastic drum into cows for people to ride in and they were all lined up and hooked to a tractor.  There was about 20 in the line.  Some were larger for adults or adults and a child to ride in.  The ride went pretty fast and made a zig zag pattern thru the field.  Vince rode alone and thought it was great!  Joel rode with me and really enjoyed it as well!

Vince, Joel and Brett in the cow train.

On the way out we picked out pumpkins!  Joel picked out his own but Vince took it upon himself to pick out pumpkins for the rest of us.  It was a really fun day but I was exhausted when I got home.  Both the kids slept in the car and were ready to go again when we got home.  I was ready for a nap!
