A simple but great idea

Vincent loves to ride his tricycle around now that his legs are finally long enough to reach the pedals.  He does a great job of riding it in the gravel.  Sometimes he rides it from the shed to the house and parks it right in front of the door.  The walk way to the house is a sloped a little and sometimes his tricycle rolls backwards.  I found out his trick to keeping it from rolling away: 3 pieces of egg shaped chalk.

New Purchase

On Monday October 15th Bob, Sarah, Brad and I officially became landowners!  It is something that we have talked about doing for a while and we finally found a piece of land that was what we were looking for.  We are very excited!  It is the first farm that we have purchased together.  After the closing the guys went and took pictures.  I would have gone too if they would have told me that was what they were doing.

Sickness!

The week after my birthday was a little crazy around our house!  Between appointments for the kids, Ray, and myself I felt like I was never home.  Ray is no longer limping and we have even been able to hook him to the new wagon.  We are still wrapping his foot but hopefully the farrier will be able to get here soon so we can just put a shoe and pad on his foot so I can stop buying duct tape.  Joel, Brad and Cecilia all had terrible colds.  Actually I think Cecilia gave her cold to Brad and Joel.  Brad and Joel are doing much better! Cecilia was another story.

Cecilia ended up with bronchiolitis. She had two doctor’s visits and a trip to the ER all in three days.  She decided to get sick on a Thursday when I was at a conference.  My mother in law was nice enough to drop everything she was doing and take Cecilia to her doctor’s appointment.  It involved a lot of driving back and forth and I am grateful she was able to do it.  Friday I got a call from Amy, our babysitter, that Cecilia was really not doing well and struggling to be able to breath even when she was sleeping.  So after several phone calls to the doctor’s office I left work and we went to the ER.  A few breathing treatments and a dose of oral steroids and she was a little better.  I was exhausted from holding her from her breathing treatments.  On Saturday Brad took her for a check up with the doctor and picked up a nebulizer for us to use at home.  I can tell you that a 16lb 9 month old is very difficult to hold for a breathing treatment if she isn’t in the mood to have one.  She is strong and fast!

Between Ray getting medicine twice a day, Cecilia getting breathing treatments every 4 hours and oral medicine twice a day, plus Joel not feeling well I felt like we were always giving someone medicine.  The kids would all get nervous when the saw me with the nasal bulb syringe!  A week later and everyone was on the mend and I don’t spend my nights hopping from room to room anymore.  There were 2-3 days in a row where I would go to bed in my room, be joined by Vince at some point, bring Cecilia into bed with us at some point and then Joel would wake up and Cecilia and I would go sleep in his bed.  Lucky me, I got to cuddle every member of my family at some point in the night.  The one night Brad tried to take my place in Joel’s room, but Joel reached over and felt Brad’s facial hair and just started crying.  It was a nice try!

This has all been a nice reminder of what a blessing it is to have healthy children.  There are so many people that have children that have to be on medicine or have special treatments for the rest of their lives.  I only had to deal with it for a week!  My hat goes off to all the parents out there that have to deal with a child’s illness everyday with no end in sight.

Aunt Kennidy comes for a visit!

My sister Kennidy has been working so hard to earn money so she can go to Belgium this summer for a little reunion with Tina.  Kennidy kept telling me that she never gets to see me, so I told her when she finally has a weekend where she doesn’t have to work that she should come stay with me all weekend.  It happened to be the weekend between my birthday and hers that she spent time with us.  I was so excited!  I actually thought about getting the kids a babysitter so I could have Kennidy all to myself, but that seemed weird.

While she was at our house we mostly just visited, played with the kids and did a whole lot of nothing special.  It was pretty great!  Saturday night we went to see the guys in the field so Kennidy could ride in a combine and semi and see Brad.  Not that Kennidy was begging to see what harvest was about, we just thought it would be good for her to see what we do.  Plus Vincent really wanted to show her everything and I needed to get out of the house.  It had been really windy all day and we couldn’t really play outside and I was tired of being stuck inside.  I think Kennidy learned a lot about farming and had fun!

Vince loves helping empty the semi trucks and running the moisture tester.  The moisture tester tests the moisture level in the corn.  That gives Brad an idea of how to adjust the dryer so that the corn doesn't get too dry.  Ideally we like to have it around 15%.  Generally when it comes out of the field it is higher than 15%.  If it is store when it is too wet you can run into problems with mold and no one is happy if we sell them moldy corn.  The night Vince was testing corn it was around 19%.  It is a great lesson for him in reading numbers, being patient and following directions.  Vince also gets to use the remote to open the hopper doors (doors on the bottom of the truck where the corn/soybeans empties out).  He had to teach me and Kennidy how to do it.

Blurry picture, but Brad was reminding Vince which buttons to press and when

Cecilia didn't want her picture taken anymore

Sadly on Sunday we had to return Kennidy to my mom!  We all had a blast having her all to ourselves!  Now to convince Kasi to come spend the weekend with us….

My Birthday!

A couple weeks ago I had a birthday.  Almost every year my husband tells me that I was born at the wrong time of year and that it is too hard celebrating my birthday because it is in the middle of harvest.  I then remind him that my parents are not farmers and it never was a problem until I married him!

My birthday ended up being very wonderful!  My friends at work surprised me with an ice cream cake.  It was raining and Brad was able to take me out to lunch, which was fun surprise!  I came home from work to cupcakes the kids (with the help of the babysitter, Amy) made for me.

They didn't waste anytime eating the cupcakes!

Vince thought it would be a good idea for Amy to take him to the store so he could buy me a gift.  He told me of his plans that morning and I told him that he should make me something instead, so Vincent and Joel made me cards and Vince made me a necklace.

Then later in the evening my mom and Dave dropped Kennidy off for the weekend and stayed for pizza.  I actually order pizza for delivery from the local pizza place which I only do 3 times a year.  It is so good and such a special treat!

It was a great birthday and the first one where I thought "wow, I really am getting older.  I am like an actual adult now and can't turn back."  Why having 3 kids and being married didn't make me feel like a real adult but turning 31 did I am not sure.
