10 years together!

10 years ago on June 26th Brad and I said “I do.”  On one hand it seems like yesterday and on the other hand it feels like a lifetime ago.  In the last 10 years we have had many adventures, some good, some bad but all very memorable.  To celebrate our anniversary I worked all day and Brad finally got to get in the field to get some spraying done.  With all the rain he hadn’t been able to get much spraying done.  It has just been slowly dragging on and driving us all crazy.

Some adventures we have had in the last 10 years include:
-trail rides
-friends weddings
-losing loved ones and friends  too early
-losing grandparents
-trips to Costa Rica and Puerto Rico
-remodeling a house
-living apart for 3 years after getting married
-showering in a basement
-having tenants
-3 almost 4 kids
-2 dogs
-forming a farming partnership
-Brad farming full time
-buying new vehicles
-getting Joel diagnosed
-family vacations
-moving
-living in Brad’s parents’ basement with all 3 kids for 6 weeks
-building fence
-buying an RV
-finding a church
-Ag Leadership Program and International trip
-changing jobs
-kids starting school

Daddy's Little Helper

Cecilia loves to help her Daddy!  The other day the boys were busy playing in their rooms and didn’t want to go outside at all.  Cecilia on the other hand was very excited to put on her brothers’ rain boots and go outside to help Daddy.  She was all smiles!  About 30 minutes later when her brothers finally figured out what was going on they were quick to try to take over as Daddy’s helpers.  She was not impressed!

Swimming Lessons are Over

For 3 weeks in June the boys were supposed to have swimming lessons for 45 min twice a week.  Unfortunately Joel broke his leg and was never able to participate.  So twice a week I loaded him and Cecilia into the stroller and squeezed through the doors of the fitness center and headed down to the pool to patiently wait for Vincent to swim.  Vincent had a blast at swim lessons.  He didn’t progress as fast as I would have liked, but I think after getting a chance to swim in our pool a lot this summer (assuming it warms up) we will be able to work on floating which seems to be the once skill that is holding him back!

A turtle!

On Tuesday June 24th we were sitting in the kitchen having a meeting with a building rep about our new barn that is supposed to go up this summer.  While we were sitting there I noticed a turtle on our back porch!  I quickly got Vincent and we went outside to look at it.  He wanted to keep it and make it a home, so I grabbed him a container and told him we could keep it until Joel and Cecilia woke up from their nap and had a chance to see the turtle.  In the meantime I turned to Facebook and my very smart friends for their opinion on what kind of turtle it was.  It turned out to be a red eared slider and most likely a female that was looking to lay her eggs.

I convinced the kids to return her down to the golf course where she most likely came from.  They have a lot of ponds down there and tall grass and it seemed like that was the only place she could have come from.  I doubt she was living in our woods or corn fields.  The kids were not happy about releasing the turtle, but we had a family vote and we all voted to return her.  But I promised if she returned we would keep her as a pet.  The chances of her returning and making it across our pasture, up the hill thru the woods and passed the horses to our porch is very slim, but it satisfied the kids.  We drew a small smiley face on the corner of her shell so we could identify her if she were to return.

Bike Riding

We don’t ride bikes a lot.  We have a gravel drive way on a hill and if you don’t stop on the way down you will end up in the busy road.  If you do make it down you have to pedal up and it is just a lot of little kids.  The kids like to ride bikes, we just don’t have a good place to do so right now.  The kids made lists of what they wanted to get done this summer and one of Vincent’s was to learn to ride a two wheeler.  He is almost 6, so it was a good goal.  So on Monday June 22nd, Joel and Cecilia fell asleep in the car on the way home from OT and I decided it was a good time to try to learn to ride a two wheeler.  We stopped by the farm and got Brad to take the training wheels off.  Then we drove to the church parking lot to practice.

While the little ones slept in the AC of the car this pregnant lady decided to make her oldest child learn to ride a two wheeler slightly against his will.  Bending over and holding onto his bike and running in the hot sun wasn’t as bad as his whining at first.  He was nervous, but we had established he was nervous and continually telling me that was not going to help.  He ended up doing really well and was able to go across 6 parking spots without me holding on.  We have a ways to go before he gets it down, but I really think he is ready to go for it.  Vincent doesn’t have the same opinion.

*We actually gave up and will try next summer.  Too hard to teach him with my pregnant belly.

A Nabor Party

On June 21st we hosted a bridal-baby shower for two different couples.  All the guys were in the Nabor House Fraternity together at the University of Illinois and nearly 20 years since starting there their pledge class still keeps in touch and gets together once in awhile.  It really is very cool!  So on Saturday 5 of our families were able to get together to celebrate Katie and Kevin’s baby and Anna and John getting married.  It was a relaxed party with 6 small children (Ages 6 and under) running around.  Everything was going well until it started raining.  The rain itself was no big deal, the party moved indoors and continued.

The day before I had mentioned to Brad that we had some water in our basement, something I was told would never happen.  You see I once asked about if water in the basement was ever a concern and I was treated like it was the stupidest question in the world and told that our house is on a hill if we were ever to get water in the basement we would have bigger problems.  As it started to rain Brad mentioned water in the basement and I said let’s go look at it while we are thinking about it.  Everyone else was eating and we snuck into the basement to check.

We have several windows in the basement, but they are all in window wells.  One of the windows had about 1” of water in it and pressed up against the glass when we got down there.  Water was leaking in the corner of the window and making a puddle.  As we stood there laughing while we contemplated what to do and the torrential rain continued there was quickly about 6” of rain water pressed up against the window.  It looked like an aquarium!  Water was no longer just leaking out but pouring out the corner of the window.  I started moving things away from the window.  Brad ran up stairs to get something and before we knew it there were 6+ adults and a lot of children in the basement.  Everyone was quickly moving the toys back away from the window.  I ran upstairs to grab some towels and Brad was using the plastic toy tubs to open the window and let the water drain into the tubs and out of the window.  After doing that several times Brad was trying to find the tile drain to clear it to help water drain.

At some point water started coming in the ceiling in the basement right over our desk and all our important papers.  You see we have lived in this house for almost a year, but our office never was completely unpacked and organized.  It is in the basement, rarely do we have guests down there so we just have no motivation to get it all organized.  I was regretting that as water was dripping down on the papers.  Luckily Brad’s friends were there because they were strong enough to quickly move the desks out of the way, not something I could have done!

At one point I went upstairs to check on something and I was told that water was dripping from our living room ceiling right onto the Wii.  Again, people were nice enough to just jump in and unplug the Wii and get things out of the way and get it dried up.  Good friends are priceless!  After Brad went outside in the downpour and cleared the small dam in the gutter things got better and the rain let up.  We as a group had done all we could in the basement to get all things safe and we just needed to clean up the water.  We discovered that we had two drains in the basement, both were in the furnace rooms and up a step.  Not ideal placement!

Vincent was very excited about the flood.  He was devising plans and wanting to direct people and come up with new ideas about fixing the problem.  He was hilarious.  Our friends’ daughter, Claire, is a year younger than him and they had a lot of fun discussing the whole situation amongst themselves.  Actually all three of Katie and Barney’s kids are about 1 year younger than ours and we are both due with #4 1 day apart.  It was fun to see the kids have so much fun together.  Our kids were not happy when their friends had to leave.  They all played very well together and Cecilia had fun playing with two other girls!  Joel enjoyed having a boy his own age to play with instead of following Vincent and his friends around.  It is always great when your kids get along with your friends’ kids!

After determining that the guys could handle the situation all the ladies and kids went upstairs and had cupcakes, ice cream and opened gifts.  The guys stayed in the basement and cleaned up the 100+ gallons of water and enjoyed some drinks before they came up for cupcakes and ice cream.  As inconvenient as it was to have water in our basement while we were hosting a party, it was actually great timing.  If Brad and I were home alone we would have  been trying to move everything, supervise the kids and trying to get rid of the water all by ourselves and in my current pregnant condition I couldn’t have lifted most of the buckets or moved the desk or climbed a ladder in the rain.  I am so grateful for good friends who are willing to jump in and help!
